St. Michael’s Night High School
St. Michael’s Night High School was established on 2nd October 1952, commemorating Gandhi Jayanti, with just a small group of boys. This noble endeavour was initiated by the late Mr J. D. D’Costa of Dhobitalao, founder of St. Joseph’s Educational Society. The first classes were held at Little Flower High School, Princess Street, Dhobitalao, Mumbai – 400 002.
Mr D’Costa was inspired and encouraged by Msgr. George Fernandes, the then Parish Priest of St. Michael’s Church, Mahim, who requested the establishment of a night school to serve the educational needs of the underprivileged.
The school began modestly with three classes – Standards V, VI, and VII, conducted in simple, chawl-like rooms. Eventually, it was shifted to the newly constructed St. Michael’s Day School building. Initially housed on the ground floor, today the Night School occupies the first floor, catering to nearly 300 students.
In 1957, the Church Management formally took over the institution. The late Msgr. George Fernandes assured that the building would be provided rent-free, and pledged the Church’s full support—both financial and administrative—for the growth of the school.
Under the original management of St. Joseph’s Educational Society, Mr Remedias served as the first Principal, with Mr Richard Fernandes as clerk, and a dedicated teaching team. Later, Rev. Fr. Darmai became the Supervisor, and Mrs U. Fernandes took charge as Principal. Upon her retirement, Mr Josy Abraham succeeded her.
Today, the school is led by a dedicated and dynamic team: Mr. Ashok J. Harikeri, Mr. Satyaprakash Rai, Mr. Yogendra Prasad Ram, and Mr. Mangesh Pawar—each committed to nurturing and guiding students with vision and care.
The mission of St. Michael’s Night High School has always been to provide education with dignity and compassion to students who cannot attend regular day schools due to personal, social, or economic challenges. Many of our students work during the day to support their families and attend classes in the evening to build a brighter future or to improve their career prospects.
In spite of obstacles, we take pride in the fact that many of our students have gone on to complete degrees in Arts, Commerce, Law, and Management. The school’s motto, “Learn While You Earn,” has truly empowered generations.
This year, thanks to the dedicated efforts of our teaching and support staff, our S.S.C. results stand at an impressive 80%—a remarkable and heartening achievement.
The dream that began in 1952 continues to thrive. St. Michael’s Night High School remains a beacon of hope, opportunity, and human dignity for the underprivileged youth of Mumbai.
