Bishop Bosco Penha, an esteemed alumnus of St. Michael’s High School, Mahim, was born in Mumbai on January 10, 1937. He was ordained a priest on December 20, 1967, and later appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Bombay and Titular Bishop of Maxula Prates on May 15, 1987, receiving episcopal ordination on August 8 that year. Serving until his retirement in January 2012, Bishop Penha devoted himself to pastoral and community-building ministries across the archdiocese.

As Director of Small Christian Communities (SCCs), he pioneered the growth of over 1,800 grassroots faith groups, nurturing collective spirituality, service, and interfaith outreach. His leadership extended to the Hope & Life Movement for widows in 1982, offering companionship and hope to hundreds through peer support and fellowship.

A respected liturgical voice, Bishop Penha coordinated lay and civic engagement initiatives, championed concise homilies, and encouraged Catholic participation in civic life as “bringing Christ into politics”. His legacy of community empowerment, pastoral care, and interfaith dialogue continues to inspire students, alumni, and the wider Church.
